The meaning of promise according to Wikipedia is a commitment by someone 

to do or not to do something.  As a noun promise means a declaration assuring

that one will or will not do something.  As a verb it means to commit oneself

by a promise to do or give.  It can also mean a capacity for good, similar

to a value that is to be realized in the near future.

MAKEUP AND WOMAN

Makeup is a subset of cosmetics that refers primarily to products containing color pigments that are intended to alter the user's appearance.

It is meant to be applied externally on the face and eye area with a brush, makeup sponge, or the fingers.

Around 5,000 years ago, ancient Sumerian men and women were the first to wear and probably invented  lipstick.  Sumerian crushed gemstones and used them to decorate their faces, mainly on the lips and around the eyes.

By 3000 BC to 1500 BC, women in ancient Indus Valley Civilization applied red tinted lipstick to their lips for face decoration.

An English excavator discover a 6000 year old relics of the ancient Egyptian pharaohs wearing organic substances to decorate his face.

By the time Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt came to power in first century BC,  Egyptian women had at their disposal an array of colorful cosmetics, which were made from rocks, minerals and plants found in the Nile region.

Cleopatra used the following materials such as:

~  bright green malachite paste of the ancient Egyptian on her lower eyelids,

~  Kohl used on her eyes as protection and decoration,

~  Castor oil used on her body as protective balm,

~  Beeswax, olive oil and rosewater as her skin cream.

The role of cosmetics continued to evolve over the centuries.
